Jerry Raymond Obit

Gerald (Jerry) Dewane Raymond, 89, died July 11, 2019 in Prairie Village, KS. He was born Jan. 6, 1930 in the village of Crosby.
He was raised by his mother, Ione (Burau) Raymond in the township of Deerwood until her passing. He assisted his mom at her establishment, the Shannon Inn, as a young boy; even serving drinks and playing cards with the regulars when they needed a fourth hand.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 during the Korean War, along with many other local boys. Amazingly, some of them served together. He served as a 3rd class Petty Officer on the air craft carrier USS Coral Sea.
Following his time in the Navy, he attended business college in Minneapolis. He married Jackie “Cheetah” Berg of Ironton on May 29, 1954 in Deerwood.
He was  an employee of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Commodities Credit Corporation, as a Contract Specialist, liked to bowl and was a Boy Scout Troop leader. He was awarded the Order of the Arrow by the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Overland Park, KS American Legion Post #370 and a member of the Forty and Eight. He was also a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #153 in Olathe, KS.
Preceeding him in death are his wife, Jackie and his sister, Joan Foote of Crosby.
He is survived by his six children: Michelle LaCroix, Robin Raymond, Geri Jayn Smiley, Erin Taylor, Teri Lynn Mills and Gregory Raymond, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and brother, Rodney Raymond of Deerwood.
There will be a graveside service at Deerwood Scandia Cemetery on Saturday, Aug. 24.
