Veronica "Tutie" J. Schemmel Obit

VERONICA "TUTIE" J. SCHEMMEL, 88, died Tuesday Dec. 5, 2023.   She was born to John and Veronica (Filla) Nelson and raised in Crosby. She graduated in the Crosby-Ironton Class of 1953. It was in Crosby that she met and married Louie.  While raising their five children they lived in many different states:  Minnesota, Wisconsin and Texas, before settling in Michigan but her heart remained in Minnesota.  She worked for Cadillac Public Schools.  She owned and operated Veronica's Weight Loss Clinic but found her passion when she became a realtor, working for Caldwell Banker Schmidt for 33 years, retiring just weeks ago. She loved both her clients and co-workers there.   She loved Minnesota, remaining close to her eight siblings and their families, returning home every year.  The Nelson family reunions were never to be missed.  She was active in many clubs throughout  the years and loved playing cards and most importantly loved being "Nana" to her 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; daughter, Diane Mayer; infant daughter Mary Alice; grandsons, Stephen and Ryan Mayer; and brothers Bob, Kip, Bud and Dick Nelson.   Surviving are her children Barbara (John) Heth, Jay (Patricia) Schemmel, David (Jayne) Schemmel and Thomas (Kimberly) Schemmel; son-in-law Dr. Philip Mayer; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; brothers, Dr. Gerald Nelson, Wayne Nelson, James Nelson; sister Scena Proodian; sisters-in-law Marilyn Nelson and Linda Nelson and  several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial  has been held. Internment at Rockford Cemetery.  Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are with Pederson Funeral Home, Rockford, MI.
