Robert T. Hillerud Obit

ROBERT T. HILLERUD, 90, USAF, Retired, died Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019. A Crosby native, he enlisted in the Air Force in January 1952. He was a pilot and flew B-29s, B-47s and C-130s. He was a command pilot with 4,500 hours of flying time and a veteran of 50 combat missions flown in Vietnam. Among his numerous military decorations are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal and the Meritorius Service Medal.
He retired after 31 years of service to live in Fort Walton Beach, FL. He and his wife, Gwendolyn, loved being together, enjoying their friends and living by the ocean. He would come home to Crosby every summer to spend time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his son, Steven Hillerud, daughter-in-law, Paula Hillerud and his parents, Evelyn and Sentry Hillerud.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Gwendolyn; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debra and Wade Shankle of Crosby and Joan and Allan Schweinberg of Oviedo, FL; a sister, Karen Hillerud; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, to whom he loved telling stories about his life.
There will be no memorial service.
