Dr. Jon Michael Wefald Obit

DR. JON MICHAEL WEFALD, the former President of Kansas State University, passed away on the morning of April 16, 2022, at the age of 84.  He was preceded in death by his father, Olav, his mother, Walma, and his sister, Beatrice Ann McKibben.  Jon was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Nov. 24, 1937.   Jon graduated from Minot, ND High School in 1955.  Jon loved to recall how one of his high school teachers told him not to think about attending college because he wasn’t smart enough.  But, never one to back down, Jon went to college anyway.

PHYLLIS IONE GIFFIN, 94, of Crosby, died on April 10, 2022 at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby.  She was born on Aug. 14, 1927 in Rock County to Eddie and Pearl (Stickney) Marxen.  Phyllis attended school in Pipestone, graduating from the Pipestone High School, class of 1945.  She moved to Crosby-Ironton in 1957.  She was employed with the Crosby-Ironton School District from 1969 to 1992.  Phyllis was a member of the Crosby-Ironton Presbyterian Church in Crosby from 1957 until it closed in 2013. She was a Deacon and Elder during those years and for many years taught Sunday School.

Paul L. Richards Obit

PAUL L. RICHARDS, 73, of Baxter, died on Jan. 25, 2022 at Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth due to septic shock and renal failure.  He was born on July 31, 1948 in Crosby to LuVerne and Clella (Henry) Richards.  Paul graduated from the Crosby-Ironton High School, class of 1966.  After graduation he joined the U.S. Navy, serving from 1966 to 1970. He was stationed in San Diego, CA and Hawaii.  In 1985 he joined the U.S Army National Guard, retiring in 2001. He was a 50 year member of the Myrin-James American Legion Post #443 in Ironton, where he enjoyed visiting with fellow veterans.

LAVONN J. REEVES of Wayzata, formerly of Bay Lake Township, passed away on March 21, 2022 at the age of 89. She spent her early years growing up on a farm with her parents and younger sister before moving into town to attend high school. After graduating high school and while working as a telephone operator, she met and married the love of her life, Eldon. They raised their two children in the cities, then moved to their lake home to enjoy retirement. Her hobbies and interests included family, sewing, gardening, fishing, cooking, baking and square dancing.

James "Jim" Allen LaBorde Obit

JAMES ALLEN LaBORDE, 62, of Fairfield Township died at his home on April 9, 2022.  He was born on Jan. 6, 1960 in Crosby to George and Phyllis (Olander) LaBorde.  He married Kathryn Harren on Aug. 25, 1979 in Emily.  He was the former owner of LaBorde Plumbing and Heating.  He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local 346 in Duluth.  He enjoyed hunting and spending time with his family. Preceding him in death are his parents and one brother, George “Louie” LaBorde, Jr.
