Veronda Schroeder Obit

Some people learn to be caregivers.  To many, it’s something that comes naturally.  Verona Provost Schroeder, who passed away on Sept. 19, 2021  at age 87, was one of the naturals.  She was a caregiver to hundreds of hospital patients and she was our family’s caregiver, in every sense of the word. Born and raised in Crosby, Verona graduated from St. Mary’s College Duluth in 1955 as a Registered Nurse.   As the story goes, there was an Air Force base at the Duluth airport and there were two nursing colleges in town – an ideal situation for nursing students and young airmen alike.

BERNARD L. CHAPMAN, 100, of Crosby, died on Sept. 19, 2021 at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. Memorials may be sent to Emily United Methodist Church, 39994 White Pine Street, Emily, MN 56447.

Robert "Bob" Wencell Novak Obit

It is with great sadness we must report the death of our father/brother/ partner/best friend, Bob Novak, whose plug was good and properly pulled on the 24th of September, 2021. Bob had been diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this year.  Considering everything, he'd actually been getting along all right until a few weeks ago when his coughing fits came back and his oxygen levels dropped.  A trip to the ER in Crosby led to a trip to St. Paul, and ended on a ventilator with pneumonia in both lungs. He was 73.

AGNES "AG" R. WIMMER, 92, of Baxter, formerly of Deerwood, died at Diamond Willow in Baxter on Sept. 25, 2021.  She was born in St. Paul on June 15, 1929 to Henry and Clara (Long) Knaff.  She graduated from Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, class of 1948. She married Alexander Wimmer on May 13, 1950 in St. Paul.  She was a retired proofreader for The Wanderer Catholic Newspaper in St. Paul and was a volunteer at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in St. Paul. Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband, Alexander; and two sisters, Lucille Wanshura and Mary Popelka.

PHYLLIS HULDA (HUNT) LEHRKE, 85, a former area resident, passed away on June 29, 2021 in Grand Rapids, MI. She was born on Aug. 3, 1935 in Aitkin to Arthur and Sylvie Hunt. She was raised in Bay Lake Township and graduated as Salutatorian from the Crosby-Ironton High School, class of 1953. In 1956 she married the love of her life, Edward H. “Oney” Lehrke in Crosby.  Ed’s career with the railroad took them to Grand Rapids, MI, where they raised three children.  They returned to the family cabin on Mission Lake every summer.

BETTY ARLENE DOMIN, 87, of Brainerd and formerly of Crosby passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Edgewood Vista Home in Brainerd. Betty was born in Pine River to Theodore and Lila (Schmidt) LaVoie on March 23, 1933. She married Frank Domin and they lived in Crosby. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Sept. 24 at 1:30 p.m. at Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby.

Richard Eugene Bandy Obit

RICHARD EUGENE BANDY,  66, of Crosby, died at his home on Sept. 18, 2021.  He was born on Feb. 22, 1955 in Huron, SD to Claude and Opal (Palmer) Bandy.  He was a member of the Gawker Slowdown Band. Preceding him in death are his parents. He is survived by his wife, Deborah; two sons and daughter-in-law, Aric Bandy of Shoreview and Ryan and Heidi Bandy of Duluth; one daughter, Ashley Bandy of Minneapolis; one brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Marilyn Bandy of Plano, TX; two sisters, Cheryl Ficocello of Coon Rapids and Laurel Bandy of Shreveport, LA; and 10 grandchildren.
